The ATP luminescence measurement is very sensitive - each ATP molecule produces one photon of light allowing the luminomenter to detect the presence of quite low bacterial numbers (less than 100 bacteria per ml).

Most countries throughout the world use a standard of 100 bacteria per ml (or 1000/l) as a guideline for the maximum number of non-pathogenic microbes allowed for drinking water standards.


ATP measurements do not detect specific bacteria genotypes, and therefore can not allowing for indication of the presence or absence of pathogenic bacteria (E-coil, Coliforms, Salmonella etc).

The intensity of the measured luminescence allows for an ultra-rapid tool for the overall presents of bacterial contamination including microbes and biological residues. This allows for an immediate decision on the suitability of the concerned water for specific use and or the need for treatment.

The volume of water analyzed by the direct method is quite small (only 200ul), high RLU scores in some cases might be obtained due to levels of microbes and other biological materials.

A gross ranking of the suspected contaminated water samples can be made using RLU values (Relative Light Units).
